O verbo to like (gostar) é usado para expressar preferências. [We use verb to like to express preferences.]
Ex:
1) I like modern art.
2) I don't like the way he looks at me...
3) I like eggs and sausages for breakfeast.
Would like (gostaria) é usado para expressar vontade de ter algo, e também quando oferecemos ou pedimos algo. [Would like is used to express wish, when we want to have something, and also to offer or order. A typical restaurant situation, when the waiter/waitress inquires us about what we want to have.]
Situação típica em um restaurante, quando o garçom pergunta o que desejamos comer ou beber:
Ex:
1) - Would you like to order sir?
- Yes please, I'd like rice, salad and steak.
2) I would like to go to São Paulo on vacation!
3) I'd like to have my childhood back...I loved to play hide & seek!
