MERCOPAR 2009

It's been a while I'm absent...but now it is time to start 2010!

Everybody knows that besides being a teacher, I'm also a translator / interpreter and English consultant. I work in events, fairs and last year I had the great opportunity at Mercopar - subcontracting and industrial innovation exposition.
I worked in the India pavilion with many companies. Despite the hot weather during the day, mainly in the last days of the fair, the event was very good. India is a Partner country at Mercopar since last year.

[Faz um tempo que estou ausente...mas agora é hora de começar 2010!

Todos sabem que além de professor de Inglês, eu também atuo como intérprete / tradutor e consultor de Inglês. Trabalho em eventos, feiras, e no ano passado eu tive a oportunidade de estar na Mercopar - feira de subcontratação e inovação industrial. Fiquei no pavilhão da Índia, trabalhei com muitas empresas. Apesar do calor, principalmente nos últimos dias da feira, o evento foi muito bom. A Índia é um país parceiro da Mercopar, desde o ano passado.]

The event takes place in October, in Caxias do Sul, the second largest city in the state of Rio Grande do Sul.
Caxias was established by Italian immigrants on June 20th , 1890.

AS SEIS REGRAS DO PLURAL / THE SIX RULES OF PLURAL NOUNS

Essa é uma forma muito simples e prática de aprender as seis regras do plural dos substantivos:

[This is a very practical and simple way to learn the six rules of the plural nouns:]


Regra 1 [Rule #1]
The plural of nouns is usually formed by adding -s to a singular noun.[O plural dos substantivos geralmente é formado com o acréscimo do -s ao substantivo no singular]

lamp - lamps
cat - cats
fork - forks
flower - flowers
pen - pens



Rule #2
Nouns ending in s, z, x, sh, and ch form the plural by adding -es.[Substantivos terminados em s, z, x, sh e ch formam o plural com o acréscimo de -es.]

moss - mosses
buzz - buzzes
box - boxes
dish - dishes
church - churches



Rule #3
Nouns ending in - y preceded by a consonant is formed into a plural by changing -y to -ies.[Substantivos acabados em - y precedidos por consoante, vão para o plural trocando o -y por -ies.]

Examples: lady, ladies; city, cities; army, armies



Rule #4
Nouns ending in -y preceded by a vowel form their plurals by adding -s.[Substantivos terminados em -y precedidos por vogal, fazem plural adicionando -s.]

Example: boy, boys; day, days



Rule #5
Most nouns ending in - o preceded by a consonant is formed into a plural by adding -es.[Muitos substantivos que acabam em -o precedidos por uma consoante, formam plural com a adição de -es.]

Example: hero; heroes; grotto, grottoes



Rule #6
Some nouns ending in -f or -fe are made plural by changing -f or -fe to -ves.[Alguns substantivos que acabam em -f ou -fe fazem plural trocando o -f ou -fe por -ves

Example: beef, beeves; wife, wives.

PLURAIS IRREGULARES / IRREGULAR PLURAL

Alguns plurais são irregulares. São formados de forma diferente e não levam somente "s" no final da palavra. Confira algumas palavras que tem plural irregular no quadro abaixo. (Clique na figura para ampliá-la)

[Some words have irregular plural. They are formed in a different way, we don't add "s" at the end of the word. Check some of thesse words on the following table (Click on the figure to enlarge.)]

EXERCISE - LIKE / WOULD LIKE

O verbo to like (gostar) é usado para expressar preferências. [We use verb to like to express preferences.]

Ex:

1) I like modern art.
2) I don't like the way he looks at me...
3) I like eggs and sausages for breakfeast.

Would like (gostaria) é usado para expressar vontade de ter algo, e também quando oferecemos ou pedimos algo. [Would like is used to express wish, when we want to have something, and also to offer or order. A typical restaurant situation, when the waiter/waitress inquires us about what we want to have.]

Situação típica em um restaurante, quando o garçom pergunta o que desejamos comer ou beber:

Ex:

1) - Would you like to order sir?
- Yes please, I'd like rice, salad and steak.

2) I would like to go to São Paulo on vacation!

3) I'd like to have my childhood back...I loved to play hide & seek!
