William Blake (1757 - 1827)



Um dos grandes poetas do Romatismo, Blake influenciou não somente a poesia do século 20, bem como gerações de poetas.

Blake nasceu em Broad Street, filho de um negociante londrino. Desde cedo, Blake revelou um lado artístico muito forte, aprendeu a fazer gravações e pinturas.Algumas de suas obras foram ilustradas por ele mesmo através de um processo por ele denominado de gravura iluminada.

Em 1779 ele começou a trabalhar para um vendedor de livros, em 1782 Blake casou com Catherine Boucher.
Poetical Sketches (Ensaios Poéticos), 1783, foi o primeiro trabalho publicado de Blake, e em 1789 ele publicou Songs of Innocence (Cantos da Inocência). O trabalho de Blake tornou-se incrivelmente complexo e isso pode ser visto em The Marriage of Heaven and The Hell (O casamento ente o Céu e o Inferno), 1790-3, onde são apresentados uma série de paradoxos mostrando a crença de Blake na supremacia moral da imaginação sobrepujando a razão.

Em 1794 Songs of Experience foi publicada (Cantos da Experiência). Um dos poemas dessa obra é The Tyger (O Tigre), que iremos ver em uma animação high-tech.

[One of the greatest poets of Romantism, Blake influenced not only the poetry of the 20th century, but also generations of poets.

Blake was born in Broad Street, son of a London hosier. In his early years, Blake revealed his skill for arts, he learned to engrave and make paintings. Some os his works were illustrated by himself through a process called iluminated painting.

In 1779, he started to work for a bookseller, in 1782 Blake married to Catherine Boucher.
Poetical Sketches , 1783, was his first volume to be published and in 1789 he published Song of Innocence. Blake's works became incredibly complex and this can be noticed on The Marriage of Heaven and The Hell, 1790-3, where we can find a series of paradoxus showing Blake's belief in the moral supremacy of imagination over the reason.

In 1794 Blake published Songs of Experience. One of the poems from this volume is "The Tyger". We'll see this poem below, in a high-tech animation.]


The Tyger

Tyger! Tyger! burning bright,
In the forests of the night,
What immortal hand or eye
Could frame thy fearful symmetry?

In what distant deeps or skies
Burnt the fire of thine eyes?
On what wings dare he aspire?
What the hand dare sieze the fire?

And what shoulder, & what art,
Could twist the sinews of thy heart?
And when thy heart began to beat,
What dread hand? & what dread feet?

What the hammer? what the chain?
In what furnace was thy brain?
What the anvil? what dread grasp
Dare its deadly terrors clasp?

When the stars threw down their spears,
And water'd heaven with their tears,
Did he smile his work to see?
Did he who made the Lamb make thee?

Tyger! Tyger! burning bright
In the forests of the night,
What immortal hand or eye
Dare frame thy fearful symmetry?

Tigre, tigre, flamante fulgor
Nas florestas de denso negror,
Que olho mortal, que mão poderia
Te moldar a feroz simetria?

Em que altura ou abismo sem par
Ardeu o fogo de teu olhar?
Com quais asas sobe ele ao que clama?
Quais as mãos que seguram a chama?

Qual ombro poderia, ou qual arte,
Essas fibras do peito forjar-te?
E, ao pulsar desse teu coração,
Que pés horrendos, que horrenda mão?

Qual o martelo? Qual a corrente?
Que fornalha fundiu a tua mente?
Qual a bigorna, os punhos são quais,
Que atenazam terrores mortais?

Quando os astros, inermes de espanto,
Salpicaram os céus com seu pranto,
Por acaso sorriu teu obreiro?
Quem te fez, fez também o Cordeiro?
